Amalgamated Builders Limited (ABL)

The Task

Multi-award winning Amalgamated Builders Limited (ABL) is a privately owned building contractor, headquartered in Invercargill with offices in Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown. Their work covers construction management, early contractor involvement, fit-outs and heritage restoration, for projects ranging from Forsyth Barr Stadium to the underground Monte Christo Winery, Hawthorndale Care Village and Coastguard Canterbury, which won an NZCPA Gold Award in 2026.

Their old website did two jobs: it gave people the phone number for their nearest office, and it listed tenders. Almost every search sent visitors to the home page, and the site only ranked on the first page of Google when someone typed ABL's own name. For a company with fifty years of landmark projects behind it, the site was hiding most of what makes ABL worth hiring.

We rebuilt the site on Drupal. It has sections for projects, services, offices, people and careers, so each project, office and job opening has its own page that Google can send people to. Each office page lists the team who work there. The ABL team can add projects, news and vacancies themselves, and we keep the site on the latest version of Drupal. It launched in March 2022 and is now on Drupal 11.

The website has two jobs for ABL: winning the next project and finding the next apprentice. Every month we report on both, and we keep working on the content with them. We write up new projects, rewrite the careers and apprenticeship pages, suggest changes wherever the data shows visitors getting stuck and keep the site design up to date.

Four years on, Google is sending visitors past the home page and into the projects, offices and careers sections and the share of people who click through after seeing ABL in Google has more than doubled.
